Photographer Research - Jerry Uelsmann
Jerry Uelsmann is a surrealist photographer that was born in Detroit, Michigan. While attending public schools, at the age of fourteen, he sparked an interest in photography. He believed that through photography he could exist outside of himself, to live in a world captured through the lens. Despite poor grades, he managed to land a few jobs, primarily photographs of models. Eventually Jerry went on to earn a BA from the Rochester Institute of Technology
Jerry is one of the oldest photographers alive at the age of 79. he began teaching photography at the University of Florida in 1960 then after 7 years of teaching photography, he got his own art show, which was very popular and got him lots of jobs as a photographer. The photograph he is most famous for is the hands. The cupped hands that show a picture. He has won many awards for his photography. In 1967, he won the Guggenheim fellowship. Following in 1972, he won the National Endowment. Then finally in 1994, he was put into the Florida Artist Hall of Fame! His work is mainly shown in America but he has travelled to make art shows in places, such as: London, Canada, Paris, Australia, Scotland, Korea and Tokyo.

I really like this photo because of how complex the image is but how effective it looks. This picture is made up of many images and was created before they invented digital editing software.
The hands make a frame so you are kind of going on a journey.
The picture seems to have two focal points - the figure and the door of the house.
The clouds add a surrealness to the photo where the figure is maybe angelic.

Uelsmann doesn't use title image so the viewer can use their own imagination.
I think this picture symbolises serenity and being peaceful. It makes me feel in awe of something.
The hands also seem to be holding water yet and are above the water of the lake.
This picture is really effective in the way the two angels contrast in colour.
The background uses dramatic textures and gives a feeling that there is sinking and lifting in the same image.
I like the way you can sort of see other images hidden in the clouds and lake - such as a bird and a heart.

Christopher Ryan McKenney
In his collection - faceless men between two worlds - Christopher Ryan McKenney plays with the visibility of men in nature, masking their faces in draped cloth or removing their heads entirely. Each surreal image depicts an incomplete man who appears to be in the process of either materializing or disappearing into thin air. Mystery surrounds the figure in each frame, which can strangely be seen within a physical frame in several instances.
This is my favorite weird and wonderful photographer due to the way that he captures an image. In the background he has the trees that are further in the background blurred - he either has used a smaller f-stop or photoshop or another photo editing software to blur out the background.
In most of his photos I have seen of his there is a depressing element in them that might represent real life issues which in some cases are quite creepy.

I think this picture of the missing man is quite ironic as the colourful balloons bring brightness and hope to a dark topic - hanging by noose. This could represent the faceless man having died and floated away to another world.
The pictures are designed to make people think what they want.

Again this picture shows someone facing troubles and personal struggles - it is upto whoever looks at the picture to decide the meaning.
I think this picture is disturbing - an extreme murder of a child by a faceless person.

Some of the pictures feature people which are covered up representing hiding ideas such as failure or fear about what other people will think.
I think this picture is one of the scariest as it seems as if the man is trapped and trying to get out of his depression maybe.

Thomas Subtil
Thomas Subtil grew up in the East of France then spent 8 years in Paris, he went to New York for a year and now moves between Paris, New York and Montreal. for now. he is a commercial photographer but particularly enjoys weird dreamlike , fine art photography, The following set of photos that I have chosen were in the series "Hakuna Matata" taken when Thomas spent time on a safari in Kenya - he loved african wildlife after being inspired by the Lion King film when he was growing up.
I like the humour in this picture - showing giraffes being so tall their heads reach over the clouds and the mountain also does this in the background.
He is really good at merging the giraffe images into the cloud image.

This picture is my favorite from the series because of how clever the picture is and making it look so real. He has made the picture look so realistic- he has got the trees bending at the point where the rope hits this trees showing the weight of the elephant. As in the photo above, the black and white contrasts so well while the elephant really looks like it is balancing mid air.
This is a complex image as he has manged to get the necks of the flamingos intertwined.
It is almost symmetrical. I like the colours and the way the sun in the background makes the focal point stand out.

Experimenting with my own pictures-using Filters, Paint and Cropping
The following photos were taken on an ipad and edited on the split pic app and animal face app.
My first final piece of work was inspired by the Jerry Uelsmann photos - black and white , incorporating a pair of hands perhaps with a meaning to the image of the dove but no title.
Below are some screenshots that show how I created the photo using photoshop.
First I started off with a picture of hands in the position that I wanted them to be in.
I then cropped the hands and gave them a black background.
I also added a grain filter to add texture to the hands.

I then used a picture of a dove with a black background.
I altered the edges of the dove to look less sharp to look like the dove was moving.
My second final piece is also based on Jerry Uelsmann's work with the hands creating a frame for the bridge - maybe for a journey somewhere else.
I really like this image because it shows that there is always hope and something better however bad things get - shown by the graveyard in the background.

My third final piece is a self portrait adapted with photoshop.
Initially I changed the photo to black and white and then I used the undo eraser to re colour the tie, the face and the stripes.
I then cropped two pictures that I had taken on the Anglesey trip to the size of my glasses lens and dropped them on the glasses lenses.
